The Pink Spatula Story
Tina Bacon started The Pink Spatula in 2009 after battling and overcoming breast cancer. Her desire was to create small batches of sweets using real ingredients with no preservatives, additives or artificial colours and flavours. Tina’s love for people flowed out of her and into all the work she did with The Pink Spatula, creating, learning, never giving up, an unwavering optimist.
It was with great sadness that we learned Tina’s battle was not over as she was again diagnosed with cancer in 2013.
Carly and I have a few incredibly fond moments of spending time with the Bacon family during this time. While we camped with our young son in Oregon during the summer of 2014, the Bacon clan joined us at our campsite for a few hours of fun and visiting. Of course, Tina brought marshmallows and we made s’mores. Tina’s positive attitude never ceased to amaze me, despite her many health struggles.
In March of 2015, only a month before Tina passed away, along with her husband Matt, Tina got a “day pass” allowing her to leave the hospital and they joined us for dinner. We asked what she wanted for dinner: steak, and green beans. We made filet mignon, laughed, prayed and enjoyed a wonderful evening together.
On March 14, we stopped at the hospital in Mission to visit Tina. She mentioned on Facebook that the coffee at the hospital was “pretty awful” and she would love a mocha and a newspaper, so we brought it. I remember the visit well, it was the only time I saw Tina cry, but only for a moment. She did not seem concerned for herself, but she loved Matt, Katie, Lauren and Nate so much – it was for them she was crying. She quickly regained her composure and the joyful attitude she carried with her everywhere she went.
Our friend Tina passed away on April 12th, 2015.
In July of 2015, Tina’s husband Matt approached us and began a series of conversations asking if we would be interested and willing to continue operating The Pink Spatula.
None of this would have been possible without Matt and his generosity, Vanessa (who worked closely with Tina to create her marshmallow creations) and all of Tina’s dear friends and supporters. It is our goal to always honour Tina in the work we do on The Pink Spatula.
